How Pure Is PURITI's Genuine Mānuka Honey? - PURITI

AllMānuka honey is not created equal. this is the first key understanding you will need to have before you begin your search for your Mānuka honey. At PURITI, we’d love to say that every jar throughout New Zealand has the same standard of quality, but there is an extensive amount of work that must be done to ensure our customers only receive the best.

Take this journey with us as we go through the many different factors that play a role in ensuring PURITI delivers genuine Mānuka honey. From the locations we source honey to our state-of-the-art facilities which test and package the honey, we have become experts in selling 100% pure New Zealand Mānuka honey.

Here are a few key tips for determining the authenticity of Mānuka honey:

Look For Our UMF (Unique Mānuka Factor) Label:

One of the easiest ways to tell if Mānuka honey is genuine is to look for the UMF™ (Unique Mānuka Factor) label. The UMF™ label is a quality trademark that is only granted to Mānuka honey that has been independently tested and certified to meet strict standards.

The UMF™ label indicates that the honey is genuine, pure, and has a minimum level of unique activity. Commonly referred to as the “four factors”, there are just four bioactive ingredients that UMF™ assesses when determining the grade of a certain Mānuka honey.

    These four factors include:

Leptosperin content: Leptosperin is a natural marker that is unique to Mānuka honey. It is used to identify the presence of Mānuka nectar in the honey and to determine its authenticity.

Methylglyoxal (MGO) content: Methylglyoxal is a key compound that gives Mānuka honey its unique level of potency - one of the key ingredients Manuka honey fans look out for when seeking the best variety.

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) content: DHA is the biological precursor to MGO, and can indicate the shelf-life of the Mānuka honey as the DHA will convert to MGO over time.

Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content: HMF is a natural byproduct of the honey-making process, but high levels of HMF can indicate that the honey has been heated or exposed to light, which can impact its unique properties.

    Consider The MGO Concentration:

Most genuine monofloral Mānuka honey brands will show their MGO concentrations on the jar, but most of PURITI’s products go above this level. When purchasing Mānuka honey, look for a product that lists the MGO content on the label. However, take comfort in knowing that PURITI always showcases their MGO concentrations along with the UMF™ insignia and rating.

PURITI separates itself from other monofloral Mānuka honey brands by ensuring we exceed the requirements of the already-strict guidelines of UMF™. Every jar of our UMF™-certified Mānuka honey has a minimum MGO requirement that is higher than what UMF™ asks for.

PURITI Honey Comes From Remote New Zealand Regions:

We harvest our pure Mānuka honey from some of the most remote regions in New Zealand - some of which are only accessible by helicopter. The Mānuka bush thrives in areas away from civilisation. In addition, there is a small window for the flower to bloom every year (around six weeks), so we always need to make sure our harvesting process is efficient.

PURITI’s Mānuka honey (and all Mānuka honey for that matter) is only produced in New Zealand. To give our customers the confidence that they are buying the real deal, we also ensure our ‘Made in New Zealand’ fernmark is on display on the side of each jar.

This government-recognised insignia tells the customer that what they’re purchasing is a proud product of New Zealand and has undergone rigorous levels of verification to ensure it is exactly that.

Pure Mānuka Honey Has A Very Distinctive Look:

Genuine Mānuka honey has a thick, creamy texture and a distinctive, slightly bitter taste. If your Mānuka honey is thin, watery, or has a bland taste, it's possible that it has been diluted with other types of honey or has been heated to the point where it has lost its unique properties.

A monofloral Mānuka honey variety will still contain some concentrations of the Mānuka nectar but it will also include one more species of honey that does not have the same level of unique properties as genuine Mānuka honey.

Extensive Testing Both Internally and Externally:

Last but not least, PURITI Mānuka honey undergoes an extensive process of rigorous testing from both internal and external laboratories. We pride ourselves on delivering nothing but pure Mānuka honey but to ensure that, we need to be constantly testing for high concentrations of the good ingredients and zero levels of anything unwanted.

PURITI’s MGO testing is truly exceptional. Our baseline concentrations for UMF™certifications are even higher than what  UMF™ask for (which is already very strict). To ensure that our customers receive the best possible Mānuka honey, we truly go above and beyond what is required.
